| STENCILING
ON WALLS |
|
Color-divided stencils are far easier to use than
one-sheet stencils. |
|
Stencils that do not repeat are meant for small
projects such as woods, fabrics, paper, or to scatter
randomly on the wall. They are also useful as accents
in creating murals. |
|
Wall stencils come in long strips that repeat the
design and are set up to make wall stenciling quick
and easy. Wall stencils can also be used for smaller
projects. Using a small stencil on a wall means
the stenciler will have to plan the spacing, repeats,
etc. for oneself, which is very time consuming.
|
|
When finished stenciling, the stencil should be
laying flat on a hard surface to prevent tearing
and very carefully cleaned with water, or soap and
water. |
| BRUSHES |
|
It is important to use a soft, high-quality stencil
brush, such as our Wall Design Stencil brush for
a smooth and even look. |
|
If using a color divided stencil, a large brush
makes the stenciling go faster and is fine for even
the tiniest size designs. Smaller brushes make shading
easier. For the less expensive one sheet stencils
a small brush eliminates the need for a lot of taping.
|
|
When finished stenciling, wash your brush thoroughly
with water and set aside to dry. Dishwashing liquid
or oil soap can be used. NEVER stencil with a wet
brush. A brush scrubber does an excellent job of
getting the bristles really clean, quickly and easily.
A well cared for brush should last the average stenciler
many years. |
| STENCILING
PROCESS |
|
Pour a small puddle of acrylic paint onto a paper
plate. |
|
Dip the stencil brush in the paint, then rub the
brush in a circular motion on the side of the plate
to spread paint on all bristles. |
|
Tap the stencil brush on a paper towel until the
brush seems quite dry.
Use the same tapping motion over the stencil. For
a darker and more solid look, tap repeatedly over
the same area. |
|
When the brush is too dry, dip into the paint again,
and be sure to tap dry again on the paper towel
before going back to the project. |
|
Tape stencil #1 where the wall meets the ceiling
and stencil with the colors for this overlay. Mark
the repeat marks lightly with a pencil on the wall,
and move the stencil so that the left register marks
line up with the pencil marks for the right register
marks. |
|
Continue around the room with stencil #1. Then repeat
with other overlays, if any, lining up with the
same register marks already on the wall.
|
|
Oil Paint Cremes can also be used, but should be
applied in a circular motion rather than by tapping.
Oils take much longer to dry, and are not covered
well by latex paint if you should want to redecorate
your room. |
